When Cyndi Lauper and WWE Joined Forces to Change Wrestling Forever

In the early 1980s, WWE was ready to grow. Vince McMahon had taken control of the company from his father and wanted to make it bigger than ever. His idea was to bring WWE to more people, not just in one area but across the country. To do that, he needed new ideas, big stars, and exciting matches.
This is when Vince got help from a surprising place, the music. Pop star Cyndi Lauper became a big part of WWE’s plans. Her manager, Dave Wolff, was a huge wrestling fan. He thought it would be a great idea to bring Lauper into wrestling to promote her music. At the same time, Vince McMahon wanted to shine a spotlight on women’s wrestling. Everything came together perfectly.

Cyndi Lauper started working with WWE and was added to a fun storyline. She was matched up with wrestling manager “Captain” Lou Albano. In the story, they became rivals and each picked a female wrestler to represent them in a match. Albano picked Fabulous Moolah, a long-time women’s champion. Lauper chose Wendy Richter, a younger wrestler with a lot of talent.
Wendy Richter had trained under Moolah in the past, but they didn’t get along. Even though their relationship was not good, the match went ahead. It became one of the most important moments in WWE’s history.

The match took place during a live event on MTV in 1984. It was called “The Brawl to End It All.” Millions of people watched it on TV. Wendy Richter won the match and became the new Women’s Champion. This win was big, not just for her, but for all of women’s wrestling.

Cyndi Lauper was already becoming popular, but her first single, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” needed a boost. Working with WWE helped her a lot. After her appearance, her music started doing better. Her next song, “Time After Time,” became a big hit, too.
At the same time, WWE started working closely with MTV. The connection between music and wrestling brought in more fans, especially young people. Hulk Hogan also became a star during this time. Everything came together to help Vince McMahon grow WWE into a huge company.

WrestleMania was created the next year in 1985. It became WWE’s biggest show. Cyndi Lauper was part of the event, helping to bring even more attention to WWE.

Wendy Richter’s time as champion was short, but it made a big impact. She became a symbol of women’s strength in wrestling. Sadly, her time ended shockingly. Later on in a match, Moolah secretly returns under a mask and wins the title in a planned surprise.
Even though Wendy did not stay long, her match on MTV and her role in the WWE story helped change things for women in wrestling forever. With Vince McMahon leading and stars like Lauper, Albano, Moolah, and Richter involved, WWE found a way to mix entertainment, music, and wrestling to grow bigger than ever before.
