Just like Demon Slayer, it’s a beautifully animated, high-stakes story about good and evil. Kimetsu no Yaiba, or Demon Slayer as it's known in the states, has gone on to become one of the largest anime phenomena in the world with its emotional narrative, high octane battles, and fierce monstrous enemies. Among the several demons in the series, Doma, the Upper Rank Two of the Twelve Kizuki, is memorable not only for his sadism but his truly nightmarish ice-based abilities.
For fans and newcomers alike asking what makes Doma so deadly, here’s what you need to know about his blood demon art, his abilities, and why his cryokinesis makes him almost impossible to defeat.
Who is Doma in Demon Slayer?
The Sound Hashira is directly responsible for a tragic event that changes the course of Mitsuri’s life, while Doma serves to highlight Mitsuri’s position within the Hashira.
Doma is easily one of the most powerful demons in the series, only losing to Kokushibo and Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King. Unlike other major demons who handle their enemies with raw power or fire-bending assassinations, Doma turns enemies to ice, freezing them solid, stabbing at them with icicles, and entrapping his victims. On the surface, his personality is patient and friendly. Underneath, he’s a cold-blooded killer who considers humans just “snacks."
Icepunk baby — How do Doma’s ice powers work?
Doma’s blood demon art is predicated on ice, or cryokinesis. He has the ability to raise the ambient temperature, killing just by being in his vicinity, heating it up to as high as deadly. His ice can take the punishment.
- Casts blinding ice to freeze foes within a large radius immediately
- Formulate pointy ice arms and buildings
- Transform the field of war into his winter wonderland
These powers render Doma lethal at both long-distance and hand-to-hand combat. This is a unique trait even among the strongest demons.
Doma’s deadliest ice attacks
Doma’s cryokinesis allows him to do a lot of creative and devastating attacks with ice:
- Lotus Vines – Summons large, lotus-shaped ice shards that home in on enemies, slicing through foes.
- Barren Hanging Garden – Launches an avalanche of ice needles at foes with his hand fan.
- Freezing Clouds – Creates a dense fog that freezes and slows down all foes within its bounds.
- Sister Bruiser Cold White Princesses – Summons ice constructs that whip freezing blasts of air over the battlefield.
- Wintry Icicles – Shoots huge, freezing icicles out with penetrating power.
- Scattering Lotuses – Throws rapid ice shuriken that cut through foes like blades.
Each of these attacks is a testament to how much area control Doma has, as he can cover his foes in icy, high-speed strikes from all angles.
His regeneration and physical power only add to his terrifying nature
Beyond his ice-manipulating abilities, Doma is superhumanly strong and heals at a rate that can only be described as superhuman. In one of these fights, against Akaza (another Upper Rank demon), Tanjiro survives having his head almost completely split in half and simply regrows it in seconds.
This healing factor is, in part, why Shinobu Kocho, the Insect Hashira, had to go in an entirely different direction. Realizing she would never be able to defeat him in direct combat, she infused her body with 700 times the typical concentration of wisteria toxin, intending to poison him from the inside after he absorbed her.
Why is Doma stronger than Akaza?
Doma ranks higher than Akaza due to having much more versatile abilities. Where Akaza forgoes all weaponry beyond physical tissue itself and martial arts, Doma can take you on with pure muscle or sorcery-esque abilities. With the flick of his wrist he is able to ensnare, crystalize, pierce, and decelerate his foes without coming near them. Add in his ice-based attacks, rapid healing abilities, and battle savvy, and it’s clear he has a serious advantage.
How Doma came within a whisker of victory
Doma’s fight was one of the fiercest fights not only in the arc but in all of Demon Slayer. He went up against several Hashira at the same time and was still in control. Only through a strategic, extremely intentional sacrifice and the cooperation of the many made him possible was he finally taken down.
His terrifying ice abilities made him feel invincible and even in the loss, he still left a frosty imprint nonetheless as one of the games’ most deadly threats.
