Group of people force entry into temple in Madhya Pradesh, thrash priest
NEW DELHI: A group of people forcibly entered the Mata Tekri temple in Dewas city, Madhya Pradesh, late Friday night and allegedly assaulted the priest who had refused them entry after closing hours.
The incident sparked controversy as the opposition Congress claimed a BJP MLA's son was involved, though police have not confirmed this allegation.
According to the priest's complaint at Kotwali police station, Jitu Raghuvanshi, who has a criminal record, arrived at the temple with others in eight to ten cars.
City Superintendent of Police Dinesh Agrawal said, "The group members allegedly asked the priest to open the gates, and when he refused, he was allegedly abused and beaten up."
Police have registered an FIR and are examining footage from approximately 50 CCTV cameras in the area.
When questioned about the BJP leader's son's involvement, Agrawal told reporters that the case was under investigation.
Social media videos showed several cars with red beacons in the fleet that arrived at the hilltop temple's base.
Dewas city Congress president Manoj Rajani said a certain BJP MLA should keep an eye on his son "who did such an act despite being a Sanatani."
The police are continuing their investigation into the incident, with a focus on identifying all individuals involved in the temple breach and assault on the priest.
