People on the internet keep on doing all kinds of experiments in life. From marrying a pressure cooker to swallowing a lighter, there's seldom a task that hasn't been tried by a person on the internet. Now, a Reddit user tried boiling penguin eggs to find out what happens, and well the results were shocking, to say the least.
A viral Reddit experiment
Unlike chicken eggs that turn solid and white when boiled, penguin eggs turn completely see-through. A viral Reddit post showed photographs of how the penguin eggs turned completely transparent when boiled, and one could see the yolk inside. But is this true for penguin eggs in general, or were the ones bought by the user a bit different?
The moment of truth

As per a 2022
report by IFLScience, there's a reason why penguin eggs turn transparent when boiled. According to the report, the albumen (egg white) of a penguin egg does solidify but doesn't turn opaque. It still maintains a jelly-like transparent appearance, allowing the person to see the yolk inside.
This happens due to a different composition of the glycoproteins in the penguin eggs as compared to chicken eggs. Additionally, penguin eggs contain around 25% penalbumin, which helps them survive the cold temperatures of Antarctica.
Reddit reacts
People on Reddit had varied replies to the interesting post, with some being surprised that the Reddit user had access to penguin eggs and others wondering how they would taste. “Now I’m curious where you are from because you have easy access to penguins eggs”, commented a user. “It has to taste like absolute gamey poultry with strong fish notes,” added another.
Should you eat penguin eggs?
Penguin eggs and meat have been a source of food for the dwellers of Antarctica. Robert Headland, senior associate at Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge, told IFLScience that explorers in Antarctica have relied on penguin meat and eggs for survival. Gentoo penguins, in particular, are known to lay multiple eggs per season, and thus their eggs are the most commonly consumed. As wondered by a Reddit user above, the eggs do carry a fishy taste due to the penguin’s diet, which is mostly based on krill.
